Co Education

Question:

Assalamualaikum,

I am from Turkey and there aren't any gender segregated universities, all of them are mixed. I am a first year nutrition and dietetics student here because we cannot afford non mixed universities abroad.

In my class there are 97 females and 3 males. I sit with only females and don't even speak with male students. I don't even know the names of the male students. Is it permissible for me to study there? Thanks for your answer

Answer:

In the name of Allah, the most Gracious and the most Merciful,

Wa alaikum Salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,

It is very important in Islam for both genders to remain segregated, only under a genuine need would they be allowed to interact with each other. The best course of action would be if you could study from home, if it isn't possible, you may go there, provided proper hijab is observed, there's no interaction with the male students and there is protection from mischief and evil.

And Allah knows best,

Mufti Umer Farooq Saleem
