Question:
A person arrives at the Masjid at such a time that the Muazzin is calling out Hayya alas Salah. How would he respond to the adhan in such a situation?

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

Answer

The Prophet (SAW) said, “When you hear the Muadhin, then say as he is saying.” (Muslim: Hadith 384)

Thus, a person should repeat whatever words he hears from the Muadhin, and it is not necessary to repeat that which he does not hear. For example, when he reached the Masjid, and he only heard the Adhan from Hayya alas Salah (until the end of the Adhan), he will only repeat that portion of the Adhan which he heard from the Muadhin, and he does not have to recite the words that are said at the beginning of the Adhan because he did not hear them.

Raddul Muhtar: v. 2, p. 65 (Maktaba Imdadia)
