Question

Assalamualaikum, I was wondering if it is okay to recite the dua Qunoot and dua of sheikh Sudais in witr as a hanafi Muslim.

Answer:

ﺑﺴﻢ اﷲ اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ اﻟﺮﺣﯿﻢ
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

In principle, there is no specific dua that must be read in *qunoot. *However, it is best to read the dua “Allahumma innaa nastaeenuka…”, but if he reads other than it (e.g. Sheikh Sudais’ dua or any dua that does not resemble kalamul naas [i.e. that which is being asked for can only be sought from Allah ﺗﻌﺎﻟﻰ, e.g. forgiveness, entry into Jannah, etc.], it would be permissible.

If he reads along with the dua “Allahumma inna nastaeenuka…” another dua, that would be good. Furthermore, if he were to add another dua to “Allahumma inna nastaeenuka…”, it would be best to add that dua which the Prophet ﷺ taught Hasan ﻋﻨﻪ اﷲ رﺿﻲ to read in his *qunoot*, i.e. “Allahummah dinaa fiman hadayta…”1
