Question:
When it was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ to face the Kabah in prayer (tahweel e Qiblah), how did everyone shift their positions? ﺑﺴﻢ اﷲ اﻟﺮﺣﻤﻦ اﻟﺮﺣﯿﻢ In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful Answer: It was revealed to the Prophet ﷺ to turn towards the Kabah whilst they were praying the Zuhr Salah. Baytul Maqdis (in Jerusalem) was north of Madina, and the Kabah (in Makkah) was south of Medina. The method of how the Muslims turned towards the Kabah during prayer was that the Prophet ﷺ went to the back of the Masjid (and stood facing towards the south), then the men went to where the women were standing, and the women went to where the men were standing. The scholars mention that perhaps this incident took place before the prohibition of amal katheer (excessive movement) in prayer, or the excessive movement was excused in this particular situation, hence it did not affect the validity of the prayer.1 Only Allah knows best Written by Maulana Mohammad Ahsan Osmani Checked and approved by Mufti Mohammed Tosir Miah Darul Ifta Birmingham [1] Ruhul M’aani: v. 1-2, p. 559 (Maktaba Rasheedia); Tafseer Ibn Katheer: v. 1, p. 401 (Qadeemi Kutub Khana); Tafseer Mazhari: v. 1-2, p. 193 (Darul Isha’at); Tuhfatul Ahwazi: v. 2, p. 327 (Qadeemi Kutub Khana); Tuhfatul Qari: v. 2, p. 243 (Zamzam); Tuhfatul Almai: v. 2, p. 165 (Zamzam); Dars e Tirmizi: v. 2, p. 112 (Maktaba Darul Uloom Karachi)
